Blockade of the collection point for green waste on Monday, July 3rd, 2023

On 07/03/2023 there was an incident at the Cala Murada green waste collection point that prevented residents from entering the collection point with their cars to throw away their green waste.

A well-known local entrepreneur had parked one of his cars right in front of the entrance to the collection point.

We spoke to the entrepreneur to find out why he made this one. His answer was as follows:

“For more than five years, we have been reporting to the Manacor City Council the damage we are suffering to our property and land as a result of the city’s conversion of the existing land. Since then, we have had regular flooding when it rains or when there are leaks in the water reservoir of Cala Murada, and as a result, there has also been a corresponding plague of mosquitoes. Part of this remodelling was even done on our property.

In all this time, the City Council is not responding, not resolving the situation, and we and our attorney have not even received any responses yet. We are now tired of this situation and have decided to act in this way.

We no longer know what else we could do.

Furthermore, we apologize to residents for the situation, but also ask for their understanding of our approach.”

The question that arises is: To what extent is it legal to set up a collection point for green space and more right next to a residential building?

What would you do if you were in their place?

Please consider the following points in your answer:

  • The entrance to the collection point has not been officially defined!
  • The strip in front of the entrance is the official parking strip – see parking sign, where parking is only not permitted at defined times – school bus times. The yellow line in front of the goal that was added later doesn’t change that, either.
In this respect, the entrepreneur has not violated any laws!
  • As can be seen in the photo, someone then said he had to unload his palm sections on the car …. This is definitely a violation of applicable laws and possibly property damage!
  • This collection point is exclusively for residents of Cala Murda, but is mainly used by “companies” to dispose of their waste cheaply. This is done with the “knowledge” of the supervisors.
  • After every weekend, someone dumps their rubbish not only in front of the gate, but also in the company’s car park because the gate isn’t open. And we’re not only talking about green waste, but also about furniture, mattresses and much more.

As a citizens’ association, we have decided to help the entrepreneur with our contacts, to hold talks with the City Council of Manacor and SAM and, if possible, to find solutions. Because we are there for our neighbours when they need us!
